After Hours Answering Service: Who Answers When Your Store Is Closed

Who answers when your store is closed? I compare a staffed after hours answering service, an AI voice agent and voicemail on order calls, cost and callbacks.

After hours answering service: Stefano Bertoli, founder of RuleInside, with a card reading: After hours calls? Google's top 9 pages all skip order status.

It is Monday morning in December. The weekend’s missed calls are waiting, and the callers want to know when their orders will arrive.

An after hours answering service is the usual answer to that problem. Most of what Google ranks first for it is written for clinics, law firms and trades. This guide is for stores.

I’m Stefano Bertoli, founder of RuleInside. I spent the last year testing AI voice platforms on real stores, then built RuleInside. This guide compares a staffed after hours answering service, an AI voice agent, and voicemail with a callback. It judges each on the calls an online store gets. RuleInside sells an AI voice agent, so I have a stake in one of the three.

Key takeaways

  • An after hours answering service answers the calls you forward to it when you close. For a store, the test is whether it can see your orders.
  • None of Google’s top 9 pages for “after hours answering service” mentions order status, and seven mention healthcare.
  • 27 store owners and staff on Reddit say what happens to an unanswered call. For 19, the call goes to voicemail or a message, or the store has no phone line.
  • Voicemail costs nothing extra, but the callback is the weak part. In Quo’s data, 69% of missed calls were not called back within 48 hours.

What is an after hours answering service?

An after hours answering service answers your business phone when you are closed. You forward your line to it at closing time, and it takes your calls until you open again.

Nextiva sells a business phone system and an AI receptionist. In its example, “from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., all calls go to the service’s phone number”.[1]

What happens next depends on the service. Typically, it answers from a script you write together and sends you each message by email, text or an app. Calls you mark as urgent go through to whoever is on call.

Three ways to answer a closed store's phone

The term covers three different answers, and this guide compares all three:

  • A staffed answering service. A person at a call centre answers in your store’s name and follows your script.
  • An AI voice agent. Software answers in a natural voice and acts on the data it is connected to.
  • Voicemail and a callback. Nobody answers, and you call back when you open.

Nextiva lists a fourth, the auto attendant, which is a phone menu. It says an auto attendant “can’t answer questions or take a message beyond a generic voicemail”.[1] So this guide counts it with voicemail.

How it differs from an answering service

An answering service is the same thing, sold for any hour. “After hours” names when it works: evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. All 17 pages Google ranks first for “after hours answering service” and “answering service” mention round-the-clock cover.

Bottom line: an after hours answering service answers the calls you forward to it while you are closed. What it can do depends on what it can see.

What calls does an online store get when it is closed?

The calls store owners describe getting out of hours are questions about delivery timing, orders and products. Owners say they pile up in the holiday season.

I read Reddit posts and replies from 2024 to 2026 about store phones, missed calls and answering services. I kept 49 from 43 people I could confirm run or work for an online store. Of those people, 16 mention nights, weekends, holidays, evenings, after hours or other time zones.

The holiday rush is when the phone becomes a problem

Six people tie their calls to the holiday season. A UK lighting shop owner put the holiday call in one line:

“You placed your order on Friday evening….between Black Friday and Christmas and you’re ringing me on Monday asking where your item is?”

A store owner on r/shopify, December 2025[2]

Another owner has a team but still gets overflow “during the holidays”, and it is “mostly phones”.[3] A print shop that runs WooCommerce sites posts its cutoff dates on every site. “We still had people calling all these past two weeks for timing.”[4]

What the callers ask

Of the people who describe calls at night or at busy times, counting each person once, five describe questions asked before buying. Four describe calls about order status or delivery timing. Two describe calls at night from other time zones. Nobody in the sample describes a night call about an order gone wrong, such as a damaged item or a wrong charge.

Written questions follow the same clock

Gorgias, which sells a help desk with an AI agent, measured this for written questions. Across its merchants, the median brand gets 53% of its pre-purchase questions outside business hours.[5] It counts questions on chat, email and contact forms, and defines business hours as Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm local time.[5]

It is not a measure of calls. I found no published figure for the share of store phone calls that arrive after hours.

Bottom line: expect questions about when an order will arrive, not emergencies, and expect most of them in the holiday weeks.

What do store owners do with calls nobody answers?

27 people in my sample say what happens to an unanswered call. For 19 of them, the call goes to voicemail or a message, or there is no phone line at all.

Here is what the 27 describe doing today. One person can appear in two rows. “A message only” means a greeting that says the store is closed, or a line that sends callers to email or chat.

What happens to the callPeople
No phone line at all9
Voicemail, then a call or email7
A message only6
They answer it themselves4
A staffed service2
An AI receptionist1
A text after a missed call1

Only 3 of the 27 describe anyone answering live out of hours. Two owners answer evenings and weekends themselves. One has an AI take a message when the store is closed.

“I’ve been on phone with people on a Sunday at 10pm, Wednesday at 5am”

A store owner on r/ecommerce, July 2024[6]

Others stop taking calls when the store closes. One owner’s greeting gives the opening hours. Then it offers a voicemail “which is automatically transcribed to text and sent to us”.[7] A clothing store owner tells customers that calls “shouldn’t be made on weekends”.[8]

Neither of the two who use or used a staffed service says it covers nights. These counts show what some owners say. They do not measure how common each choice is among stores.

Bottom line: most of these 27 owners let the call wait for the morning. So compare every option against voicemail.

Why most after hours answering services are built for clinics and trades

Google’s first page for “after hours answering service” is written for businesses that book appointments and route emergencies to on-call staff. It is not written for stores.

I read the 17 pages Google ranks first in the US for “after hours answering service” and “answering service”. I used code to count what each page covers, then checked by hand every match the code found.

Who Google's first page is written for

Healthcare appears on 11 of the 17 pages, legal on 11, home services on 9 and property management on 7. Appointment booking and emergency escalation each appear on 13.

The emergencies include floods, fires and medical calls. Nextiva gives this example: a property manager has the service forward “any calls regarding flooding or fires to the on-call property manager”.[1]

What Google's first page says about stores

None of the 17 pages mentions a store’s order status, tracking, returns, shipping, stock or checkout. None names WooCommerce or WordPress, and only one, a Forbes Advisor list, names Shopify.

The search for “after hours answering service” on its own gives the same picture. None of Google’s top 9 pages for that search mentions order status, and 7 mention healthcare.

When these pages do mention a store, they mean a desk that takes orders by phone. Eight of the 17 pages mention taking or processing orders by phone. AnswerConnect’s after-hours page says “E-commerce never sleeps”.[9] AnswerMTI says “Our live agents handle web-based orders around the clock”.[10]

Sixteen of the 17 pages are written by companies that sell an answering service. The one that does not, a Forbes Advisor list, discloses that it earns commission from partner links.

Bottom line: Google’s first page never says how a service handles a call about an existing order, so you have to ask.

Staffed service, AI voice agent or voicemail: the three options side by side

The three options differ most on one thing a store cares about. Can the caller get an answer about their order before you open?

Staffed answering serviceAI voice agentVoicemail and a callback
Who answersA person at a call centre, from your scriptSoftware, in a natural voiceNobody until you call back
“Where is my order?”Takes the details, unless it can see your ordersAnswers, if it is connected to your storeWaits for the morning

How it is billedBy the minute or the call, on a monthly planVaries by vendorYour phone plan
What you get next dayMessages by email, text or an appA summary or recording of each callVoicemails to return

A staffed service and an AI agent both answer the phone. The difference is what each one can look up while the caller waits.

A person with your shipping policy and FAQ can answer many timing questions from what you wrote. Without access to your orders, they can only take the details when a caller asks about an order. An AI agent connected to your store answers from the live order and the live catalogue. It is only as good as that connection and the rules you give it.

Voicemail answers nothing, but it costs nothing extra. Most of the 27 owners who say what they do rely on voicemail or a message, or have no phone line. Voicemail’s cost arrives the next morning, in calls to return.

Bottom line: choose by what your callers ask; if they ask about orders, choose an option that can read your orders.

What does a staffed after hours answering service do with a store call?

A staffed service answers in your store’s name, follows your script and sends you a message. Some take new orders. None of the 17 pages ranking for the two searches says its agents can look up an existing order.

The script is built with you. AnswerConnect says: “We work with you to create call flows to give your clients the best experience”.[9] AnswerMTI says it screens calls and transfers important ones to you, and takes “detailed messages” for the rest.[10]

Can a staffed service see your WooCommerce orders?

Abby Connect, which sells human and AI receptionists, has a page about WooCommerce. Its receptionists capture “the order number and the issue” and file them as notes in your store.[11]

The same page draws the line: “Abby doesn’t read your orders or sales, doesn’t touch inventory or refunds”.[11]

So a staffed service can take the details and promise a reply. Unless it can see your orders, it cannot tell the caller where the parcel is.

Who answers at night, and from where?

Nine of the 17 pages ranking for the two searches say where agents are based. Ask, because the night shift may not work from the same place as the day shift.

AnsweringService.com says most calls go to US-based receptionists. The rest go “to our other locations in periods of peak demand or after hours”.[12] ReceptionHQ says its “overnight calls are handled by our equally skilled, English-speaking team in Australia”.[13]

Neither is a problem on its own. What matters is that the person on the line has your delivery times, returns policy and stock notes in front of them.

One call at a time

Nextiva notes that “one live agent can only handle one call at a time”.[1] In the holiday rush, ask how many agents cover your line at night.

Bottom line: a staffed service gives every caller a person, and gives you a message. It cannot answer about an order it cannot see.

How much does an after hours answering service cost?

Staffed services bill by the minute or by the call, on a monthly plan. The lowest starting price on Google’s first page is $25 a month, at AnsweringService.com and ReceptionHQ.[12][13] Neither page says how many calls or minutes the $25 plan covers. ReceptionHQ also offers 15 calls a month for $39.[13] The plans below list their minutes, and run from $47 to $649. All prices here are in US dollars.

Priced by the minute

AnswerMTI and MAP Communications both publish minute plans. MAP’s figures come from its pricing page as archived on 20 September 2026, because the live page refused my requests.

PlanA monthMinutes includedEach extra minute
AnswerMTI Business$470$1.37
AnswerMTI Growth$177125$1.30
AnswerMTI Premium$296225$1.28
MAP Pay As You Go$490$1.37
MAP Business$179125$1.30
MAP Enterprise$339250$1.28
MAP Premium$649500$1.28

Sources: AnswerMTI’s pricing page[14] and MAP’s archived pricing page.[15]

What counts as a minute

Ask what a minute includes. AnswerConnect publishes no prices, but it does define a minute. It counts “the total time required to handle the call, including any after-call work our receptionists do to take your messages”.[9]

Priced by the call

Smith.ai’s human receptionists start at $300 a month for 30 calls, then $11.50 for each call over 30.[16] Its page adds: “Calls at 2 pm and 2 am cost the same.”[16]

Worked example: 20 calls a month, 3 minutes each

AnswerMTI Business
$47 plus 60 minutes at $1.37: $129.20
AnswerMTI Growth
$177, with 125 minutes included
Smith.ai Starter
$300, with 30 calls included

The 3 minutes is my assumption. Where after-call work counts, a call is billed for longer than the conversation lasts.

Nights, holidays and spam

Some services charge more outside business hours. ReceptionHQ applies an after-hours surcharge on weekends, on US federal holidays, and on weekdays outside 5am to 7pm.[13] Smith.ai and Ruby say they charge the same at any hour.[16][17]

Spam is the other line on the bill. Smith.ai does not charge for spam calls, as long as your forwarded line passes caller ID.[16] Our voice AI pricing guide prices AI receptionists and voice agents in the same detail.

Bottom line: price a month of your real calls, then ask what a minute includes and whether nights or holidays cost more.

What does an AI voice agent do when your store is closed?

An AI voice agent talks in a natural voice and answers from whatever data it is connected to. Connected to your store, it can tell a caller where their order is at any hour.

Some answering services now sell AI for the night shift. Smith.ai offers an “AI Receptionist with human backup” for calls “outside of normal 9-to-5 business hours”.[18]

One owner's setup

One owner in my sample, a Shopify merchant, uses an AI receptionist today. It checks order status and tracking. Asked for a person, “it will transfer the call during regular business hours or take a message when we are closed”.[19]

Their reason: “Previously, calls would go to voicemail, and there would be an unusually high number of hang-ups”.[19] That is one owner, not a measurement.

Which AI agents can read WooCommerce orders?

Almost none say they can. I compared 13 AI answering services, mine among them. None of the other 12 shows a WooCommerce order lookup in its help pages or docs. The detail is in our guide to the best AI answering services for online stores.

Mine, disclosed

My own AI voice agent is one of these, so weigh this part with that in mind. It reads live WooCommerce orders, stock and policies, and your store keeps its own phone number. It says it is an AI at the start of every call.

When a caller asks for a person, it transfers the call to your phone. If nobody picks up, it keeps a record of the conversation and confirms the next step with the caller. It never decides a refund: that comes to you. We manage it for you, every day, weekends included.

Bottom line: an AI agent answers for a closed store only when it is connected to your orders. Calls about money still go to a person.

Voicemail and a callback: why the callback is the weak part

Voicemail costs nothing extra, and 7 of the 27 owners in my sample use it. Its weak part is the morning. Many callers do not pick up a callback, and many missed calls are not returned within two days.

People ignore unknown numbers

Pew Research Center surveyed 10,211 US adults in 2020. Eight in ten said they don’t generally answer a cellphone call from an unknown number.[20] But 67% said they don’t answer, then check a voicemail if one is left.[20]

A survey for Hiya’s 2026 report (Hiya sells caller ID) found only 14% answer an unknown number straight away. Another 41% ignore it and see if the caller leaves a voicemail.[21] It covered more than 12,000 people in six countries, not only the US.

Many missed calls are not returned

Quo, a business phone company, looked at 16.7 million missed calls from its customers. It found that 69% were not called back within 48 hours.[22] For consumer goods businesses, Quo puts the callback rate at 22%, without defining that group.[22]

Not every caller leaves a message

How many callers leave a voicemail is disputed. Invoca’s 2021 platform data put it at 2% of unanswered callers.[23] In CallRail’s 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42% said they leave one.[24] One measured calls and the other asked people, and both companies sell call software.

How to make voicemail work

  • Give your hours in the greeting, and say where callers can track an order right now.
  • Have voicemails transcribed and sent to your email.
  • Return every call the next morning, and leave a message if nobody picks up.
  • Follow up by email when you can match the caller to an order.

Bottom line: voicemail works only if the callback happens, so make the morning callback a fixed job, not a hope.

Recording and AI: what callers must be told

If a service records your calls, California law requires the consent of everyone on a confidential call. None of the 17 pages ranking for the two searches mentions recording consent or AI disclosure.

Recording a call

California Penal Code section 632 bans recording a confidential call without the consent of all parties. For a first offence, the fine is up to $2,500 for each violation.[25] A call is not confidential where the parties can expect it to be recorded. That is why a notice at the start of the call matters.

Saying it is an AI

In Utah, a business using generative AI with a customer must say so if the customer clearly asks.[26] Mine says it is an AI at the start of every call.

Calling back with an AI voice

A callback is an outbound call, and different rules apply. The FCC ruled in 2024 that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA).[27] Such a call needs the person’s prior express consent, and written consent if it is marketing.[27]

A callback made by a person from your store is not an artificial voice call under that ruling. Our guide to what voice AI is covers these laws in more detail. This is not legal advice: check the rules in the states you sell to.

Bottom line: whichever option you choose, ask whether calls are recorded and how the caller is told.

Which after-hours answering setup fits your store?

Start from your own calls: how many come in while you are closed, and what they ask. Your phone log and a week of voicemails will tell you.

  • A few calls a week, mostly about delivery times. A clear voicemail greeting, transcription and a fixed morning callback.
  • A holiday rush you cannot cover. Cover those weeks: overflow to a staffed service, or an AI agent that answers timing questions.
  • Callers who ask where their order is. An option that can read your orders, or the caller still waits for the morning.
  • A person on every call, whatever it costs. A staffed service, with your shipping policy and FAQ in the script.

If you hand the phone to someone else, ask any provider the questions in the checklist below. Our guide on how to outsource customer service covers the hand-off in full. Our guide to customer support for ecommerce covers who should answer as you grow.

Test any after hours answering service before you sign, mine included

  1. Call with an order number. Hear what the caller hears at 11pm.

  2. Ask about stock. Name a product you sell and ask if it is available.

  3. Ask for a refund. It should take the details and promise that a person will follow up.

  4. Ask who is answering. A person or an AI, and does it say so?

  5. Ask what a minute includes. And whether nights or holidays cost more.

  6. Ask where the night shift is. And how many agents cover your line in December.

  7. Ask what reaches you next day. A message, a summary or a recording, and how fast.

  8. Ask about recording. Are calls recorded, and how is the caller told?

Bottom line: match the option to the question your callers ask most, then test it with that question before you pay.

Questions Store Owners Ask About After Hours Answering Services

An after hours answering service answers your business phone while you are closed. You forward your line to it at closing time. A person or an AI takes each call, follows your script, and sends you a message or puts urgent calls through.

Published staffed plans start from $25 a month, though those pages do not say what the plan covers. Plans that list their minutes start at $47 to $49 a month with no minutes included, then charge about $1.37 a minute. Larger plans run from $177 to $649 a month. Smith.ai’s human receptionists start at $300 for 30 calls. Ask what a minute includes before you compare.

It depends on how many calls come in while you are closed. For 20 calls a month at 3 minutes each, the cheapest minute plan in this guide costs $129.20. That is AnswerMTI’s $47 plan plus 60 minutes at $1.37. Some services charge more at night or on holidays, so ask before you compare.

You forward your business line to the service. Its agent answers in your store’s name and follows a script you agree. It takes a message and sends it to you by email, text or an app, and puts urgent calls through to you.

The best after hours answering service for a store is one that can answer your callers’ real questions. Google’s first page for an after hours answering service is written mostly for clinics, law firms and trades. So call any service with an order number and a stock question before you sign.

Yes. Some answering services sell an AI receptionist for the night shift. Smith.ai sells one with people as backup. An AI voice agent connected to your store can answer order and stock questions at any hour. Money questions go to a person.

Not on the pages I read. None of the 17 pages Google ranks first for “after hours answering service” and “answering service” mentions order status. Abby Connect writes call notes into WooCommerce, but says it doesn’t read your orders. An AI agent connected to your store can look an order up during the call.

Some do. ReceptionHQ charges an after-hours surcharge on weekends, on US federal holidays, and on weekdays outside 5am to 7pm. Smith.ai says calls at 2pm and 2am cost the same, and Ruby says it adds no fee for any hour.

Voicemail records a message, and nobody answers until you call back. An answering service puts a person or an AI on the line, who can answer, take details and put urgent calls through. Voicemail costs nothing extra; an answering service bills by the minute or the call.

Not always. In my sample, 19 of 27 owners send the call to voicemail or a message, or have no phone line. A clear greeting and a fixed morning callback make voicemail work. An answering service starts to pay when calls pile up, as in the holiday rush. It also pays when callers need an answer about their order before morning.

How I wrote this guide

Who wrote it. I did. I run RuleInside, which builds and runs AI voice agents for WordPress stores. So I sell one of the three options compared here.

The top-ranking pages. I read the 17 pages Google ranks first in the US for “after hours answering service” and “answering service”. I read them on 18 October 2026; Ubersuggest recorded those rankings in August and September. I used code to count what each page covers, then checked by hand every match the code found.

The services. I read each service’s own pages on 14, 17 and 18 October 2026. MAP’s prices come from its pricing page as archived on 20 September 2026. I did not call or buy any service. The worked example is my own arithmetic on their published prices.

Owners. I read Reddit posts and replies from 2024 to 2026 in r/shopify, r/ecommerce and r/woocommerce. In r/smallbusiness, I could search only some months. I checked each useful author’s other posts. I quote as owners only those I could confirm run or work for an online store.

Updates. I revise this guide when a service or a law changes. The date at the top shows the last real update.
